Sheep shearing at schools 2016

Bloem Show shearing demonstrations at schools explain where jerseys and scarfs come from

It's time for Bloem Show from 27 April to 7 May in Bloemfontein. Along with the fun, comes the opportunity to learn.

Bloem Show provides a number of opportunities for children to learn about the environment, agriculture, and where things like food and clothes come from.

The popular shearing demonstrations will once again be presented at three schools in Bloemfontein. Witness the blowing wool at the shearing demonstration and learn more about how a sheep is sheared; how the wool is spun and then knitted to make jerseys and scarves, which keep us warm during the winter.

Bloem Show, in conjunction with the NWGA, will conduct three sheep shearing demonstrations at schools in Bloemfontein during March 2016

4 March – Rosenhof School
8 March – Lettie Fouche School
9 March – Wilgehof Primary School

The demonstrations mainly involve the shearing of sheep, first by hand and then with a machine. Thereafter the two types of shearing methods compete against one another. General information are given to the children and the process of how the wool is spun and knitted is explained.

The spinning and knitting ladies do the demonstrations voluntary and the children are normally amazed by their skill and creativity. The children also get the opportunity to touch the wool and ask questions.

The demonstration will be held on a shearing platform and presented by Mr. Izak Kloppers from the National Wool Growers Association. NWGA is involved in the training of sheep-shearers in South Africa.

Shearers that will feature during the demonstrations are of the best in the country.
